Check out what's happening this week at Youngstown State University.Monday, Oct. 8. The College of Fine and Performing Arts hosts an open house. The Dana School of Music will begin activities at 8:30 a.m. in the Bliss Hall first floor lobby. Monday, Oct. 8, 7 to 9 p.m. The James Dale Ethics Center at YSU hosts a free lecture in the Board of Trustees Meeting Room of Tod Hall. Visiting Buddhist Lama Geshe Soepa presents “Ethical Practice: Laying the Foundation for a Good Life.” This lecture is co-sponsored by The Manjushri Study Group of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition.

Wednesday, Oct. 10, 12:15 p.m. The Dana New Music Society and the Dana Composers Ensemble presents a free Music at Noon concert in the Butler Institute of American Art. Another concert is set for Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. in Bliss Recital Hall. For more information, call 330-941-3636.

Wednesday, Oct. 10, 7 p.m. YSU women’s soccer team takes on Cleveland State at Stambaugh Stadium. The team also plays Loyola on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m.

Thursday, Oct. 11, 6 p.m. “Competing in the Global Market: Opportunities for Regional Businesses” is the title of the latest presentation of the YSU Alumni Lecture Series in YSU’s Williamson College of Business Administration Conference Center in Williamson Hall. Friday, Oct. 12, 4 p.m. The Dana School of Music presents a lecture by noted musicologist Kevin Korsyn in Bliss Recital Hall. The lecture is titled “Reception History and the Trauma of Real History:  Decoding the Pantomime in Haydn’s ‘Farewell” Symphony.” The lecture is free and open to the public.

Friday, Oct. 12, 7 p.m. The Penguins’ volleyball squad squares off against Cleveland State in Beeghly Center.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 12, 13 and 14. University Theater presents Anton Chekhov’s comedy/drama “The Cherry Orchard” in Spotlight Arena Theater in YSU’s Bliss Hall. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m., while Sunday matinee performances are at 3 p.m. All seats in Spotlight Theater are general admission. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12 and 13, 8 p.m. The Ward Beecher Planetarium at YSU features “Cosmic Castaways,” a new full-dome show produced by the planetarium and based on research by two YSU astronomy professors. The planetarium also presents “The Case of the Disappearing Planet” at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13.
