Due to increasing costs, changing compliance regulations and to bring Youngstown State University in line with best practices at other universities in Ohio, YSU is implementing a new policy for the use of credit cards to pay charges on student accounts, including tuition.
Effective July 1, 2012, there will be a 2.75 percent convenience fee on all credit card transactions. MasterCard, Discover Card and American Express credit cards will be accepted.
In addition, Visa credit cards will no longer be accepted, as they do not participate in the fee structure.
YSU will continue to accept payment by electronic check, check, debit card and cash with no fee. Visa debit cards will continue to be accepted.
“These changes are in line with policies already in place at all of the other public, comprehensive universities in the state,” said Neal McNally, YSU budget director.
Bowling Green, Cleveland State, Kent State, Miami, Ohio State, Ohio U, Akron, Cincinnati, Toledo, Wright State currently charge a credit card transaction fee and do not accept Visa credit cards.
McNally said it is important to note that YSU does not collect or keep any part of the fee. He said it is also important to note that the convenience fee does not apply to retail sales, such as the Bookstore, Kilcawley Center and the Athletic Ticket Office, which also will continue to accept Visa credit cards.
The new rules will eliminate about $300,000 in annual administrative fees paid to credit card companies by YSU.
