Take the “6 for 16” holiday plunge

Holiday ScheduleIt’s becoming known around campus as “6 for 16.”

The adjusted schedule for the holiday period this year affords the opportunity for employees to have 16 days off with using just six vacation days.

President Randy J. Dunn recently announced that, except for scheduled athletics events, the university will be closed from Wednesday, Dec. 25, through Sunday, Dec. 29, and then again on Wednesday, Jan. 1.

The closure on Thursday, Dec. 26, is necessary so that the substation housing the university’s main electrical feed from Ohio Edison can be inspected and maintained. The work requires that all electrical service be shut down six to eight hours. YSU and Ohio Edison chose to do the work Dec. 26 to take advantage of daylight and to provide for contingency time, if required, to resolve any unforeseen problems. Employees should not report that day and are not required to take paid leave.

In addition, with the agreement of the ACE and APAS bargaining units, the President’s Day contractual holiday, usually taken Dec. 24, will instead be taken Friday, Dec. 27.

In all, that means employees who choose to take vacation days on Dec. 23, 24, 30, 31 and Jan. 2 and 3, will be off 16 days in all, from Saturday, Dec. 21, through Sunday, Jan. 5 – thus, “6 for 16.”

For details of the adjusted calendar plan, including exceptions and other special circumstances (i.e., throughout the entire period, university police and dispatchers will report as scheduled), refer to President Dunn’s memo at www.ysu.edu/president and information on the Human Resources website at www.ysu.edu/hr.
