President’s job advertised, board to serve as search committee

To ensure that the selection process for a new president of Youngstown State University can move at an accelerated pace, the Board of Trustees will serve as the search committee, but everyone on campus and in the community will have plenty of opportunity to provide input.

“We vow to be inclusive and transparent throughout this process, but we also seek to be efficient and expedient in order to get a new president in place this summer,” said Sudershan Garg, board chair. “Therefore, since the Board of Trustees is charged with making the final selection of the new president, we feel it is appropriate for the trustees to also serve as the search committee.”

Garg said that, as in the past, final candidates for the position will visit campus, meet with various groups and hold open forums. “Everyone on campus and in the community will be invited to attend these meetings and provide feedback to the board,” he said. “This is a vitally important part of the hiring process, and we encourage everyone’s participation.”

The board’s tentative timeline calls for preliminary interviews with a short list of candidates by the end of April and campus visits for final candidates by mid-May. The university hopes to have a new president in place by July 1.

The nine members of the YSU Board of Trustees are appointed by the governor. The board also consists of two students members, also appointed by the governor.

Randy J. Dunn, after only seven months in office, announced Feb. 17 that he was resigning as YSU president to take the presidency of Southern Illinois University. Dunn’s last day at YSU is March 21.
