As part of the continued efforts of Information Technology Services to improve network security on campus, YSU is now requiring everyone to regularly update their passwords.
“The most fundamental thing we can do to enhance security is to regularly change our passwords,” said Ken Schindler, chief technology officer. “It’s paramount.”
Under the new rules outlined by Schindler in a campus memo, passwords must be changed every 180 days. Currently, there is no requirement to change passwords, which Schindler said is extremely rare in the public sector. He noted that some universities are requiring password changes every 90 days, while others are even moving to the use of “password phrases.”
“This is a nice baby step for us,” Schindler said. “This is network security 101.”
Current passwords will expire on a randomly selected date between Sept. 15 and March 15. Seven days before your password expires, you will begin receiving a daily email reminding you that your password will expire. From then on, you will be notified every 180 days that your password is expiring and needs to be changed.
The password controls access to all YSU systems, including the MyYSU portal, O365 email, Blackboard, all computer logins on campus, YSU wireless network access and YSU remote network VPN service.
