Michael Garvey of Canfield, president and chief executive of M-7 Technologies in Youngstown, is the featured speaker at Youngstown State University’s fall commencement at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16 in Beeghly Center.
Also speaking is Vincent Deem, who will graduate summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies and a minor in biology.
A native of Warren, Garvey earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Michigan State University and worked on Wall Street before returning to Ohio in 1985 to help his father rebuild the family’s manufacturing business. M-7 Technologies, an engineering, manufacturing and research organization, was launched in 2004. The company is currently collaborating with YSU to develop digital-based, multi-sensor component characterization systems for the Department of Defense. In 2010, the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services recognized M-7 Technologies as the Ohio Employer of The Year.
Deem, a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, is a certified environmental professional intern from the Institute of Professional Environmental Practice. This past spring he conducted environmental research on the island of San Salvador, Bahamas. Deem currently works at OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology, where he is responsible for the development and management of the center’s recycling program, facilities management and maintenance, and contributes to new exhibit design and construction. He plans to earn a master’s degree in a related environmental field and to pursue a career in resource management and conservation.
