Chris Herren, former college and NBA basketball player, speaks about addiction and recovery 7 p.m. Monday, March 30, in the Beeghly Center on the campus of Youngstown State University.

The event, sponsored by the Mahoning Valley Hospital Foundation in partnership with YSU’s Department of Campus Recreation and Department of Athletics, is free and open to the public. The Mahoning Valley Hospital Foundation donated $10,000 to sponsor the event.

Parking is available in campus lots for $5.

Herren realized his lifelong dream to play for the Boston Celtics and lost it all to alcohol and drug addiction. Sober since Aug. 1, 2008, Herren has refocused his life to put his sobriety and family above all else. Herren’s memoir, Basketball Junkie, written with Providence Journal columnist Bill Reynolds, was released in May 2011, chronicling his struggles with addiction and his journey on and off the basketball court. He is also the subject of the Emmy-nominated ESPN Films documentary “Unguarded.” For more information on Herren, visit www.ahoopdream.com.
