This Week at YSU, March 23, 2015

Monday, March 23 and Wednesday, March 25. Interaction designer and media artist Jakob Marsico visits YSU to lecture and present hands-on workshops. Workshops will be presented during classes on Monday and Wednesday in Bliss Hall Room 3000, 9 a.m. to noon. The workshop is for YSU students, but the public may observe. Marsico also presents a free public lecture 3 p.m. Wednesday in the McDonough Museum of Art. More here.

Tuesday, March 24, 12:30 p.m. Susan Jacoby, an independent scholar who now focuses on American intellectual history, presents “The Culture of Distraction: Why the Young Need to Fight It,” in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center as part of the Dr. Thomas and Albert Shipka Speaker Series The lecture, free and open to the public, is based on Jacoby’s best-selling 2008 book, The Age of American Unreason. Wednesday, March 25, noon to 1 p.m. “Let’s Talk about (How Not to Have) Sex: Lessons from High School Health Class” is presented in the Ohio Room of Kilcawley Center as part of YSU’s Women’s History Month. The free presentation will address the ways that abstinence-only education may end up promoting negative attitudes about sex among teens and problems for their sex lives as adults. More here.

Wednesday, March 25, 3 and 5 p.m. The Penguin women’s softball squad takes on Kent State at the softball field along Fifth Avenue. The team also has home games against Oakland 4 p.m. Friday, March 27 and noon and 2 p.m. Saturday, March 28.

Wednesday, March 25, 7 p.m. “ALEC and the Oil & Gas Industry v. Source Water Protection & Home Rule in Ohio: How we got to where we are and what we can do about it” is the topic of the next presentation in the YSU Speaker Series on Energy and the Environment in Room B112 of Cushwa Hall. The presenter is Julie Weatherington-Rice of Bennett & Williams Environmental Consultants Inc. and adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering at Ohio State University. Thursday, March 26, 7 to 8 p.m., and Friday, March 27, 11 a.m. to noon, Brianna Wu, head of the video game development studio Giant Spacekat, lectures on “Sexism in the Tech Industry” in McKay Auditorium in Beeghly Hall, part of YSU’s Women’s History Month. For opinions she has expressed about misogyny in the gaming industry, Wu has received several threats, including death and rape threats. She has been interviewed on CNN and MSNBC. The episode called “Intimidation Game” on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is based on an amalgamation of her experiences and those of others like her in the gaming industry. More here.

Friday, March 27, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. YSU business students interview with area employers during the Spring 2015 Williamson College of Business Administration’s Internship Interview in Williamson Hall on the YSU campus. More here.

Friday, March 27, 9 to 11:45 a.m. The International Trade Assistance Center in the Williamson College of Business Administration at YSU is offering a seminar to showcase three effective global business support programs for Northeast Ohio businesses – the Cleveland- Europe Express Linear Service, Foreign Trade Zones and the Global Trade Group. Friday, March 27. Diversity Leadership Recognition Dinner and scholarship benefit concert featuring Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. in Stambaugh Auditorium. The dinner is 5:30 p.m., followed by the concert at 8 p.m. Murphy is the 2011 winner of America’s Got Talent. Friday, March 27. The 79th Annual Juried YSU Student Art and Design Exhibition opens in YSU’s McDonough Museum of Art on Wick Avenue in Youngstown. An opening reception is set for 6 to 8 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. Awards will be presented at 7 p.m. More here.

Monday, March 30, 7 p.m. James Randi, magician, escape artist and the world’s most tireless investigator and demystifier of paranormal and pseudoscientific claims, visits YSU in Room B112 of Cushwa Hall. “An Honest Liar,” a documentary of Randi’s life, will be screened, followed by a question-and-answer session.
