The Youngstown State University Wind Ensemble, which recently released its latest CD recording, opens its fall 2012 performance season with a free outdoor concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, in the Warren Amphitheatre in downtown Warren.
2012 NAXOS International, considered the world’s largest classical music on-line music distributor, released the latest recording of the Wind Ensemble last week. The CD, titled Old Wine In New Bottles, is part of NAXOS’ Wind Band Classic Series. Find more details on the recording here.
The NAXOS Wind Band Classics Series is devoted to presenting the best in symphonic band music, performed by international wind ensembles such as the President’s Own U.S. Marine Band, Peabody Conservatory Wind Ensemble and the University of Houston Wind Ensemble.
Conducted by Stephen L. Gage, YSU music professor, the YSU Wind Ensemble is the premiere performing group in the wind band program at YSU and is comprised of the top wind and percussion
students in YSU’s Dana School of Music. The group consists of 52 members from four states. The Wind Ensemble has given feature concerts for numerous regional and national conventions, was the first Dana musical ensemble to perform in New York’s Carnegie Hall.
Gage will be joined at the Sept. 5 concert by guest conductors Brandt Payne, Dana assistant professor, and graduate conducting intern Eric Bable. Also featured in the concert will be Dana students Keith Petersen, a senior from Pittsburgh, who will narrate “Casey at the Bat,” and Sierra McCorvey, a senior from Howland, who will sing Gershwin’s “Someone To Watch Over Me.” Other pieces that will be performed include the National Emblem March, Olympic Fanfare & Theme, Highlights from “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” and Stars and Stripes Forever March.
The concert is free. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held at 7 p.m. in Bliss Hall Room 2326 on the YSU campus. The concert is co-sponsored by the YSU Performing Arts Series and the Trumbull County Performing Arts Series.
