YSU Welcome Week kicks off Aug. 16

welcome week 2014Youngstown State University kicks the start of Fall Semester 2014 with a variety of Welcome Week activities to help students learn about campus, meet fellow students and connect with the people and resources for a successful college career.

Penguin Palooza Welcome Week begins Saturday, Aug. 16, with move-in day for residential students, continues with the start of classes on Wednesday, Aug. 20, and concludes on Saturday, Aug. 30 with the “World’s Largest Paint Party.” Students also are invited to the installation ceremonies for new YSU President Jim Tressel at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, in Beeghly Center.

Life Size Jenga & Pizza Party, 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

MONDAY, AUGUST 18
Penguin Pride Picnic, Noon to 1:30 p.m.
Location: Stambaugh Stadium East Side Stands (Rain Location: Stambaugh Basketball Court):   

After you have spent the morning learning about your college and networking with faculty and staff, stop by Stambaugh Stadium for lunch. Meet the rest of your fellow students and learn about some of our YSU traditions. Then afterward be sure to stick around to attend President Tressel’s installation.

The Installation of President James P. Tressel, 2 to 3 p.m.
Location: Beeghly Center Gymnasium

A formal ceremony to celebrate and mark the beginning of Mr. James Tressel’s presidency at YSU. An informal reception will follow the ceremony in Beeghly Center.

Outdoor Concert- Colorblind, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The Cafaro and Lyden Green will come alive as the band “Colorblind” provides live musical entertainment. TUESDAY, AUGUST 19 
Student Leadership Summit, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Guest speakers, interactive leadership sessions, giveaways and lunch will once again be the order of the day as we kick off the school year! Our leadership summit provides a unique opportunity for student organization leaders to network and get to know other organization members, all the while learning of the many features that are available to all of our registered organizations. We encourage all registered student organizations to be represented, hoping that one or more (and yes, advisors are always most welcome) officers will make plans to attend the leadership workshop. Party on the Plaza is the annual outdoor series that begins right after the end of the work week. It features live music and a fun atmosphere on a large, outdoor sidewalk plaza in Downtown Youngstown. Grab the shuttle and head downtown for live music and entertainment.

Meet the Marching Pride, 7:30 to 9 p.m.

Get a jump on the music the YSU Marching Pride will perform during Penguin Football games this fall when you attend “Meet the Pride.” You’ll have a chance to sit in the stands at Stambaugh Stadium and watch these talented musicians perform on-field.
