Application deadline is March 8 for the Summer Honors Institute for gifted and talented students June 17 to 21 on the campus of Youngstown State University.

Participants must be formally identified as gifted and talented and must have completed 10th and 11th grade in June 2013. There is a nonrefundable $45 fee to cover student lunches for the week. Parking is available in university lots at the daily rate.
New to the Institute this year is a residential option for students wanting to stay on campus for the week. The cost of the residential component is $300, which includes meals, room and linens. Structured learning activities will be conducted each night.
SHI participants attend a variety of courses and hands-on activities in a wide range of disciplines taught by university professors and area school educators. Among the courses: Potato Cannon, Entrepreneurship, Crime Scene Analysis, International Business, Harry Potter, and Healthcare in the 21st Century and Acting Improvisation, Designing Robots, Utica Shale: What’s It All About, Electronic Music, and Programming Robots.
Participants spend Monday through Thursday immersed in two classes – one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. They engage in hands-on, active learning experiences exposing them to concepts and ideas not available in high school. Lunchtime consists of activities for social and personal enrichment. On Friday, students participate in learning activities in the morning and are provided information about YSU majors and services during a college fair. The week concludes with an afternoon Friday celebration where participants demonstrate what they learned in their courses.
