YSU Senior named to Academic All-America Division I Women’s Basketball Team

YSU Senior Brandi Brown has been selected for the 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Women’s Basketball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

A communications studies major with a 3.75 G.P.A., Brown is the second-leading scorer in Youngstown State history with 1,861 points. The Pomona, Cal. native is averaging 19.3 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. She is the 22nd-leading scorer in the nation and ranks 11th in rebounding. A two-time All-Horizon League second team selection, she has led the Penguins to a 17-6 record this season, including a 7-3 in league play. She already owns Youngstown State career records for games started, free throws made and free throws attempted. She is only 40 rebounds shy of the rebounding record. A two-time Academic All-Horizon League honoree, Brown is only the second player in league history with at least 1,800 points and 1,100 rebounds.

She joins Marissa Kastanek of North Carolina State, Elena Delle Donne of Delaware, Jacqui Kalin of Northern Iowa and Chiney Ogwumike of Stanford to round out the Capital One Academic All-America Women’s Basketball Division I first team.

The five members of the team have an average G.P.A. of 3.76.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
