Penguin Bowl is Feb. 9 in Kilcawley Center

Penguin BowlHigh school students from Ohio, Pennsylvania and Kentucky will compete in the Penguin Bowl from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in Kilcawley Center on the campus of Youngstown State University.

The Penguin Bowl is part of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl, a program of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership based in Washington, D.C.  Through this educational forum, the NOSB strives to encourage and support the next generation of marine scientists, policy makers, teachers, explorers, researchers, technicians, environmental advocates and informed citizens, to be stewards of the ocean. This year, about 2,000 students from more than 300 high schools will participate.

At the Penguin Bowl, 16 high school teams consisting of four or five students are tested through quick answer buzzer questions and thought-provoking team challenge questions.

This year marks a new partnership between the Penguin Bowl and OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology in Youngstown. Students will participate in a pizza party and sleepover the night before the event. The party will include a special performance of Dr. Ray’s Amazing Sideshow of Science.

The winning team will compete against 24 other regional champions in the 16th Annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee April 18 to 21.
