Dana presents “Beethoven in the Steel City”

beethoven-1c628ce046d43b41b278ebf76ae11b71f0c07473The Dana School of Music Symphony Orchestra presents “Beethoven in the Steel City” at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 27, in Stambaugh Auditorium on Fifth Avenue in Youngstown.

The 52-member orchestra will be under the baton of newly appointed conductor, Stephen L. Gage, and graduate conductor Heather Johnson, who is in her final semester of her master’s degree program in conducting performance. Johnson is a member of the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and is instructor of horn at Slippery Rock University and Westminster University.

New Dana faculty member Joseph Kromholz is the featured violin soloist. He teaches violin, viola, and chamber music, and also directs the Dana Chamber Orchestra. Kromholz previously taught violin at Luther College in Iowa and at the North Bennet Street School in Boston. Kromholz studied violin at the Cleveland Institute of Music and economics at Case Western Reserve University, followed by doctoral studies at New England Conservatory. He was concertmaster of the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra, and he previously performed in the Charleston Symphony, the New York String Orchestra, the Aspen Chamber Symphony, and the Aspen Festival Orchestra.

The concert opens with, “Steel City Overture,” by Virginia -based composer, Anthony O’Toole, who composed the work in 2013 for a special concert given by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The Dana Symphony Orchestra’s performance will be the second performance of this work. O’Toole was recently in-residence on the YSU campus where he worked with the Dana Symphony and the YSU Wind Ensemble on two of his compositions.

Other selections for the concert include Darius Milhaud’s early 20th century chamber orchestra masterwork, “Creation du la Monde, Op. 81a”; Camille Saint Saens’ classic work for violin, “Introduction and Rondo Cappricioso”; Pablo de Sarasate’s “Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso”; and Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 1 in C Major, Op. 21.”
