YSU Center for Applied History wins statewide award

Ohio-Academy-of-History-LogoYoungstown State University’s Center for Applied History, along with the Friends of the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor and the Massillon Museum, has received the Public History Award from the Ohio Academy of History.

The award was given for “Celebrating the Legacy of the New Deal,” a project that focused on labor history and the New Deal. Individuals involved in the planning and execution of the project were Donna M. DeBlasio, Martha I. Pallante and Thomas E. Leary, all faculty members in YSU’s Department of History; Alexandra Nicholis Coon from the Massillon Museum; and Tom Sodders.

The project featured three components.

  • YSU students in the Museum Curation class developed a traveling exhibition, “Forged in Battle: Remembering the 1937 Little Steel Strike,” which premiered at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor, 151 W. Wood St. Youngstown, in June 2012.  The exhibition was a commemoration of the 75th anniversary of strike.
  • An exhibition on “New Deal Labor and Art,” which looked at the artistic contributions of the era that depicted workers and work.  The exhibit opened in September 2012 at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor.
  •  A two-day symposium in September 2012, “Crucibles of Change: New Perspectives on Labor in the Great Depression and World War II.” The symposium featured speakers included Atty. Staughton Lynd, historian Brigid O’Farrell and art historian Henry Adams.  Both exhibitions travelled to several venues, including the Cleveland Public Library and the Massillon Museum. The project was funded by a grant from the Ohio Humanities Council.

The Ohio Academy of History is a statewide organization bringing together teachers, scholars, public historians and students interested in all fields of history. At its annual meeting, the Academy gives awards in teaching, research, publication, service and public history.
