Leaders of Youngstown State University’s Annual Institute on Taxation and the YSU Lariccia School of Accounting and Finance recently recognized the late Scott Hockenberry for his contributions to the Institute and to YSU.

“Scott’s leadership in the Tax Institute and to YSU in general were exemplary,” said Ray Shaffer, chair and professor of the Lariccia School. “His commitment has been vital to the success of our school and the Tax Institute.”

Hockenberry, who died in July 2011, earned bachelor’s degrees in music and accounting from YSU. He served as president of the Mahoning Valley Chapter of Certified Public Accountants and was active in the YSU Outreach Accounting Advisory Board and the planning committee of the YSU Annual Institute on Taxation. He was also very active with the Lariccia School of Accounting and Finance, serving on various committees and the Advisory Council.

The daylong Institute on Taxation at YSU, now in its 36th year, provides local CPAs, practitioners and tax preparers required professional development while helping generate funding for student scholarships. Since 1975, the Institute has raised more than $90,000 in scholarship monies for YSU undergraduate students majoring in accounting. The Institute was started in conjunction with the Internal Revenue Service, which has participated since its inception.

At the Institute session earlier this summer, attended by more than 120 individuals, Hockenberry was recognized for his contributions.

In addition, Scott and his wife, Elizabeth, established a scholarship at the YSU Foundation before his death for YSU accounting students. Since its creation, more than $4,000 in scholarships has been awarded to YSU students.
