The women’s Penguins basketball team opens the 2013-14 season against VCU in Beeghly Center at 2:05 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9.

Monday, Nov. 4, 6 p.m. The Stiletto Brass Quintet, an all-female brass group, performs a free concert in Bliss Recital Hall. More at

Monday, Nov. 4, 8 p.m. The Dana School of Music’s Jazz Ensemble 1, directed by Kent Engelhardt, performs in Kilcawley Center’s Chestnut Room. The concert features music by Duke Ellington, Thad Jones, and Bob Brookmeyer, as well as selections from the Great American Songbook as sung by Katelyn DeLadurantey. The concert closes with “Whirlybird” by Neal Hefti as recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra. Free and open to the public.

Tuesday, Nov. 5, 12:30 p.m. Jennifer Michael Hecht, author of seven books of history, philosophy and poetry, presents the 2013-14 Dr. Thomas and Albert Shipka Lecture in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center on the YSU campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Wednesday, Nov. 6, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Nearly 600 students from 18 high schools throughout the tri-county region attend Business 2020 in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center.

Wednesday, Nov. 6, noon. “Native American: Vanishing Race or Just Invisible?” is the topic of a brown bag lunch discussion at the main branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. The discussion is presented by the library and YSU’s Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs. More at

Wednesday, Nov. 6, 12:15 p.m. Dana School of Music’s Saxophone Studio performs a free Music at Noon concert in the Butler Institute of American Art.

Thursday, Nov. 7, 5:30 p.m. The YSU Arts Mean Business series presents “Got Cash; Now What? Financial Issues for Arts Based Businesses.” The session introduces basic bookkeeping and financial principles that will be useful for all kinds of artists including small arts-based businesses, dance studios, bands, photographers and more. Speakers include representatives from Hill, Barth & King LLC. alumni lecture seriesThursday, Nov. 7. “The Future of Fossil vs. Sustainable Energy Sources” is the topic of an Alumni Lecture Series presentation in Moser Hall on the YSU campus. A panel discussion will start at 6 p.m. in Moser Room 2400, followed by a reception in the Moser Hall’s lobby at 7 p.m.  Cost is $5 for Alumni Society members and $7 for non-members. Friday, Nov. 8, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. YSU’s Williamson College of Business Administration holds the 17th Annual Accounting and Finance Student/Practitioner Day in the Conference Center of Williamson Hall on the YSU campus.

Friday, Nov. 8, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Rigelhaupt Pre-Law Center and the Political Science Department at YSU sponsors Law Day, an annual event for students considering a future in law and law-related fields. The event is in the Presidential Suite of Kilcawley Center on the YSU campus. More at

Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 8, 9 and 10. Music from a half-century of YSU theater productions are featured in “Celebrating 50 Years of University Theater: A Musical Commemoration” in Ford Theater on the YSU campus. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m., while Sunday matinee performances are at 2 p.m. The show also runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov.15, 16 and 17.
