Members of the Warren-Youngstown Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota Alumnae announce a recital in honor of Mary B. Smith, longtime Youngstown State University employee and the chapter’s most active patroness, at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, in Bliss Recital Hall on the campus of YSU.
Sigma Alpha Iota is an international music fraternity whose mission is to encourage, nurture and support the art of music, and to encourage women musicians of all ages, races, and nationalities. The Dana School of Music’s Sigma Alpha Iota chapter, Alpha Nu, was installed in 1930 and has been active since then.
The concert celebrates Mary B. Smith’s long and active life and dedication to SAI, and to spur additional contributions to the YSU Scholarship fund named in her memory. Smith, who died in 2012, held several positions at YSU, including registrar and director of Career Planning and Placement. She retired in 1983, but remained a strong supporter of YSU.
The concert is free and open to the public. Scholarship contribution information for the Mary B. Smith Scholarship, which provides aid to a deserving adult student who cannot otherwise qualify for specific financial assistance, will be available. Those who would like to contribute, but cannot attend the conference, may send a check to YSU University Development, One University Plaza, Youngstown, OH 44555, designating the contribution to the Mary B. Smith Scholarship Fund.
