How we met …My husband and I met in the fall of 1978. He was from Warren, I was from Poland, and we were both music education majors – he was a percussionist and I played French horn. We were hanging around with a group of friends that evolved into what we liked to call a “family” in which he and I were “cousins.” One day in January, he asked if I wanted to grab a bite after we both finished giving private music lessons, and we spent several hours together that night talking. When I saw him in Bliss Hall the next morning, he greeted me with a big kiss and hug. It was then that I knew that he and I were meant for each other – six weeks later we were engaged; a year and eight months later we were married. Bruce is worship leader at our church, leading the singing, singing solos and duets with me, and also works at Wal-Mart. I taught high school band but later went back to school and graduated from the Choffin School of Practical Nursing. I’ve been working as a licensed practical nurse for 20 years. We have three sons and three grandchildren. – Debbie Cooper
Shawn Aker, ’05 BSAS in exercise science, ’08 Doctor of Physical Therapy, and Heather Baltic Aker, ’07 BSAS in Forensic Science, were married August 4, 2013. They live in Columbus, Ohio. How we met … I was a University Scholar living in Cafaro House in 2005 when another YSU penguin, Paul Walker (’07 BSBA in finance), insisted I meet Shawn, a doctorate of physical therapy candidate. We met and sparks flew! After graduation in 2007, I moved to Columbus to pursue a Master of Public Health degree in epidemiology at Ohio State University, while Shawn accepted a position in Colorado Springs. We kept in touch across distance and time only to reunite in Columbus in the winter of 2011. It was as if we hadn’t missed a beat. Shawn proposed on May 13, 2012 while rock climbing, the same location where we’d reunited, and I took home a “rock” that Shawn had designed just for me. We were married on the beautiful beaches of the Le Blanc Spa Resort in Mexico on August 4, 2013. Shawn is now a physical therapist with Allegiant Healthcare Staffing and I’m a Program Director at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center.
