New and Early Music concerts set for March 7

The Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University presents the Dana Composers EnsembleRobert Rollin, director—and YSU Early Music EnsembleRandall Goldberg, directorin two joint concerts on Wednesday, March 7.

The first program will be a free Music at Noon concert in the Butler Institute of American Art’s Beecher Court. The second program will be  at 8 p.m. in Bliss Recital Hall.

Both concerts are free and open to the public.

Several world premieres will be presented, including three trombone trios: On the Run by freshman Michael Lynch; Captain’s Log by sophomore Jesse Martin; and new work by junior Samantha Hogan.  Senior Carol Ann Smolka will premiere her new song, “I Still Dream.” Richard Zacharias, Youngstown area composer and a member of the New Music Guild Inc., will have his String Quartet No. 2 premiered by a group consisting mainly of Dana alumni.  Guest flautist and Dana alumna Michelle Murray will perform Edgar Varèse’s Density 21.5. Dana faculty Gwyneth Rollin, violin, and Robert Rollin, piano, will present Lyric Counterpoint on a Theme by Warshawsky, a set of variations on a famous klezmer melody.
