Judaic Studies holds free Holocaust education workshop

holocaust echoes and reflectionThe Center for Judaic and Holocaust Studies at Youngstown State University hosts a free workshop about the Holocaust for educators and education students 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30.

Pre-registration is required by Oct. 15 by calling 330-941-1604 or emailing judaic@ysu.edu.

Participants will be introduced to the pedagogy of teaching the Holocaust, including suggestions on how to approach the teaching of the Holocaust in the classroom. Attendees will be guided through lessons on ghettos, the final solution, rescuers and non-Jewish resistance to the Holocaust and will learn about various web resources and the various ways they can be used by teachers. Lunch will be provided.

The workshop will be lead by Stephanie McMahon-Kayne from Yad Vashem, who will be teaching the “Echoes and Reflections” curriculum developed through a partnership among the Anti-Defamation League, the USC Shoah Foundation Institute for Visual History and Education and Yad Vashem. McMahon-Kayne has been at Yad Vashem, in the International School for Holocaust Studies, since 1999. Since 2005, she has been the Desk Head for International Seminars in English.
