Youngstown State University’s Performing Arts Series and the Dana School of Music present Engelbert Humperdinck’s opera Hansel and Gretel Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday April 18, 19, 20 and 21 in Bliss Hall’s Ford Theater on the YSU campus.
Thursday through Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday matinee performance is at 3 p.m.
Tickets are $5 for YSU students with ID; $15 for adults; $10 for senior citizens, YSU faculty and staff and high school and college students from other universities. Tickets are available at the University Theater Box Office at 330-941-3105. University Theater season ticket holders receive a special rate of $5. Parking is available in the Wick Avenue deck for a nominal fee.
An opening night dinner will be held 6 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at the MVR, 410 N. Walnut St. Dinner/theater package tickets are $20 for season ticket holders and $30 for a dinner/theater ticket package for non-season ticket holders. Advance reservations and payment are mandatory by calling the University Theater Box Office at 330-941-3105. No walk-ins will be permitted.
In addition, a one-hour children’s performance has been added to the schedule on Saturday, April 20 at 1 p.m. The performance will be just long enough to introduce children to opera. After the show, there will be a sweet treat and the chance to meet the characters for photos. Tickets are $7 for children and $10 for adults and include the performance and treat. Advance registration is also necessary by calling the University Theater Box Office.
The opera is based on the popular German fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm that includes two lost but clever children, a gingerbread house, a wicked witch and 14 heavenly angels.
The opera program director/vocal director is Allan R. Mosher; music director/conductor is Dr. Hae-Jong Lee; stage director/scenic designer is David Vosburgh; assistant stage director is Nancy Hensley; choreographer is Abby Alter, Shenango Valley Ballet Theater; lighting designer is Kevin Wolfgang; hair and make-up designers are Linda Leith and Robert D. Matthews; costumer is Barbara Luce; and technical adviser is Todd Dicken. In addition, the others assisting with the production include Girard City Schools Youth Chorus, Sue Ellen Harris Davis, director; Austintown Middle School Chamber Chorus, Bill Klein, director; and stage manager, Devin Whitehouse.
