- A classical guitar recital by guest artist Jeff McFadden on Friday, Nov. 15, 8 p.m. in Bliss Recital Hall.
- A jazz guitar master class with guest artist Dan Wilson on Monday, Nov. 18, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Bliss Hall Room 3026.
All events are free and open to the public.
The YSU guitar student recital on Nov. 7 includes classical guitar solos, jazz guitar solos, jazz guitar duos, and classical guitar quartets. The repertoire features music by Miles Davis, jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, the Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquin Rodrigo, and the YouTube hit, Pachebel’s “Loose” Canon arranged by the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet’s “loose” arrangement of the Pachelbel Canon for four guitars was originally intended as an inside joke for the LAGQ members, however, the send-up of Pachebel’s melody has become a standard LAGQ encore and an internet sensation.
The YSU Classical Guitar Quartet 1, comprised of Dana students Canadian guest artist Jeffrey McFadden, a lecturer in guitar at the University of Toronto, performs Nov. 15. McFadden has been a featured performer at several international music festivals, including “Guitar ’87” and GuitarFest ’91 in Toronto, Gitarren-Symposium Iserlohn, Lachine International Guitar Festival, the Columbus State Guitar Symposium, and The Niagara International Chambre Music Festival, the National Flute Association (USA) Convention, the Festival Mediterraneo della Chitarra, the Acadia Guitar Festival and others. In 1992, McFadden was awarded a Silver Medal in the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America Competition and was also a prize-winner in the 1993 Great Lakes Guitar Competition.
YSU alumnus Dan Wilson conducts the master class on Nov. 18. Several Dana guitar groups will also perform during the two-hour class. Wilson received a bachelor’s degree in Music and Liberal Studies from Hiram College in 2006 and a master’s degree at YSU in 2009. He has toured with Eric Marienthal, the Golden Gospel Singers. He also teaches jazz guitar and improvisation at Cuyahoga Community College and leads a group of musicians from the Northeast Ohio/ Pittsburgh area who can be heard on the 2012 album titled To Whom It May Concern.
