Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music announces the final fall semester concert by the YSU Concert Band and Wind Ensemble, conducted by Brandt Payne and Stephen L. Gage, on Monday, Nov. 24, at 7:30 p.m. in Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Avenue, Youngstown.
The groups include more than 100 woodwind, brass, piano, harp, string bass and percussion students from the Dana School of Music.
The concert, entitled “Musical Variations,” opens with the Concert Band performing a new setting of The Star Spangled Banner that was arranged for the 2014 Ohio High School All State Concert Band. The program continues with Distant Voices by Thomas Osborne and Sea Songs by British composer, Ralph Vaughan Williams, conducted by graduate conducting assistant, Kevin Scales of Atlanta, Ga. The Concert Band closes with Darius Milhaud’s classic, Suite Francaise.
After a brief intermission, the YSU Wind Ensemble takes the stage with Norman Dello Joio’s Variants on a Mediaeval Tune based on the holiday song, In Dulci Jubilo, guest conducted by Payne. The ensemble then presents James Barnes’s Symphony No. 3: Movement 3 “For Natalie”. The Wind Ensemble closes its performance with Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor, BWV 582 by J.S. Bach and set for wind ensemble by Donald Hunsberger.
