“Arts Mean Business,” a series of four workshops running through the fall and aimed at the business side of the arts, kicks off this week with a session about writing a business plan for an art business.
The workshops are presented by Youngstown State University’s College of Creative Arts and Communication and the Power of the Arts, a community arts and cultural group. The Raymond John Wean Foundation provides additional support for the series.
The following sessions are scheduled:
March 26, 5:30 p.m., The Art of Writing Business Plans, featuring Denise Glinatsis Bayer, The Legal Creative, at the McDonough Museum of Art on the YSU campus. Parking is available at the Wick Avenue deck for a nominal fee. Description: Art is a business and there is an art to running a business, but before there can be a business there should be a plan. Business plans provide the structural framework around which a business can thrive. If you are just starting your art business or have had an art business for years, you will benefit from a written business plan. Learn how to draft a proper business plan – a must for any small business, especially the art business. This session will also provide a brief introduction to functioning as a limited liability company, a corporation, or operating as a sole proprietorship.
May 14, 5:30 p.m., The Changing Art Market in the Digital Age, featuring RJ Thompson, YSU assistant professor of Art, at the Raymond John Wean Foundation, 147 W. Market St., in Warren. Free parking is available in the Franklin Street deck. Description: Anything you can think of is available for purchase online, including a grocery shopping service, handcrafted Amish furniture, a college education, and even your competitor’s work. The Internet has truly expanded the reach of many artists including visual as well as performing artists. The online marketplace can provide not only exposure for your art, but also convenience for both the consumer and you. This session will cover topics such as the best platforms for selling your art, how to price your art, how to create and promote an online presence and much more. Ask your questions to learn how to expand your art from the art gallery wall to a Facebook wall, from a flyer advertising an art sale on a bulletin board to a gallery of pictures of your work on a Pinterest board.
Oct. 1, 5:30 p.m., Show Me the Money! Finding Grants and Commissions, featuring Tricia Ostertag, Arts in Stark, at the Raymond John Wean Foundation, 147 W. Market St., in Warren. Free parking is available in the Franklin Street deck. Description: Many great artistic projects never become a reality simply because they go unfunded. Connecting to benefactors to produce art projects can be challenging, yet opportunities for artists are more plentiful than you might think. If grants for artist projects, commissions for public art, and artist in residency placements are opportunities that you would be interested in pursuing, this session is for you. Come learn how to connect to these opportunities and – more importantly – how to fund them.
Nov. 5, 5:30 p.m., My Home is in the Valley; My Work is Everywhere, featuring panelists James Pernotto, visual artist, and Donny Yallech, musician, at the McDonough Museum of Art on the YSU campus. Parking is available at the Wick Avenue deck for a nominal fee. Description: The Mahoning Valley is home to many talented and successful artists who have taken a variety of paths to achieve success. Each has a story ripe with learning experiences about being an artist based in the Valley. Artist panelists will share their experiences as well as discuss the benefits and challenges they face in presenting their art nationally, regionally, and locally. Whether you are an emerging artist or an established artist this dialogue is sure to be stimulating and thought provoking.
